One Summer in October

We’ve been taking full advantage of our ‘bonus summer’ the last couple of weeks. We visited Bill and Lorrie at their campsite in Sandbanks one day. Another day we drove to Picton with Rick and Josée. The guys rode their bikes home (about 55 kms), while Josée and I hit the coffee shop, a bookstore and a couple of boutiques. Another day, we met up with Ric and Sue for a hike. Ray met up with Joe for what will likely be the final kayak of the year.

My sister usually hosts Thanksgiving dinner, but their condo is now home to four foster kittens, plus the two cats they adopted from the last litter they fostered, so we hosted it here instead (even though letting Juno loose with half a dozen cats would have been great fodder for the blog). My brother and sister-in-law weren’t able to make it, and Megan also had family plans, so it was just the five of us.

Ray’s mom has decided it’s time to move into a retirement residence, so Ray spent a few days in Georgetown helping her get the house ready to list. At 92, she still lives independently, drives, and is sharp as a tack, but we’ll feel much better knowing she can walk down the hall to do her laundry instead of climbing up and down two flights of stairs.

When Ray left for Georgetown, Juno – who normally sticks to me like velcro – spent all morning looking out the front window. I’m not sure if she missed Ray or if she’d figured out the pattern – Ray’s gone so Auntie Karen and Harper must be on their way. They were.

So attentive. Might have been the chicken I was cooking.

Karen and I were quite proud of ourselves for not opening any boxes of Hallowe’en chocolate bars. We may have had waffles with ice cream and maple syrup, and gone through a couple bottles of wine, but we did NOT touch the chocolate. Yay us!

When Nick was home at Thanksgiving, he mentioned that April had received quite a lot of press in my latest blog post while he hadn’t even received a mention. I told him he needed to up his game now that he’s not climbing towers and taking helicopter rides to remote mountaintops. Live a more blog-worthy life kid. You gotta give me something to work with. He’s at the climbing gym or the cross-fit gym at least once a day. Eat, sleep, work, workout, repeat. What am I supposed to do with that? But, in the spirit of making him feel loved, here are a few pics from Nick’s life.

Ray and I signed up for a Learn to Curl class and had our first session yesterday. So far it seems pretty easy-peasy. We haven’t actually thrown a rock yet, so I suspect that’s when it will get trickier.

  1. Keep up the the ‘curling’…and soon you you’ll have knees like mine! (Don’t forget the rowing and skiing)….bent and sore (all the best sports for our knees, of course 😉 I’m sure you’ll enjoy it, though!

  2. I don’t think we FINISHED both bottles of wine and I think you should note that we didn’t finish the box of waffles or the container of ice cream. We’re being so good! No lumps of coal for us this Christmas.
    Gotta love sister weekends. 💕
