Some days I want to just curl up and watch reruns of The West Wing and pretend it’s the real world for a while. Sticking your head in the sand isn’t necessarily a bad idea when you’re in the middle of a shit storm. Self preservation.
I haven’t provided an update on Nick in a while. He’s been back in Kingston since August and says virtual learning is ‘weird’. It seems crazy to be paying $14,000 in tuition for pre-recorded online lectures…but it is what it is I guess.
He and his three housemates have converted their tiny living / dining room into a tiny living / dining / weight room so they can avoid using the gym on campus – which, surprisingly enough, is open despite everything else being closed.
Nick’s gained 20 pounds of muscle over the past few months, but he’s not sure how long he can keep up that lifestyle because shopping for, cooking, and eating enough food to keep his weight up is both time consuming and expensive. He eats five meals a day and that heaping bowl of pasta on the right is just one of those meals…and, yes, that’s just for him. His body fat is still about 12 percent. I don’t have to work nearly that hard to keep my weight up. In fact, it’s almost effortless.

Ray and I made a trip home to Georgetown – my first since Christmas – to visit family before the second wave of the pandemic arrived. Along the way, we stayed with my sister and brother-in-law at another rented cottage in Prince Edward County. We had hot sunny days for the whole week. My sister didn’t fall out of a canoe this time. She fell off her bike, but I didn’t get it on camera. The three of us rented electric bikes one day while Ray rode his regular bike. The salesperson said Ray was a brave man and would get quite a workout. Of course, he was still up ahead of us the whole time. We cycled 50 or 60 kilometres along the millennial trail, past alpaca farms, vineyards and two snakes. My phobia is somewhat more manageable when I’m up off the ground, but I quickly vetoed a suggestion that we hike the trail the following day. We opted for a beach hike at Sandbanks instead.
The gorgeous weather continued for the few days we spent in Georgetown so we got a chance to visit with family and neighbours outdoors.

Now we’re back in Ottawa listening to the October rain, adjusting to the idea that summer is over, the second wave of the pandemic is here, and it’s likely to be a looooong winter.
Four weeks until moving day.

He can’t afford to keep buying groceries?? 🤣😂🤣. He has my phone number… 😊
Good thing you didn’t get a picture of me falling off my bike. Otherwise I might have had to get a picture of your reaction when we zoomed by the snakes!
Oh he’s fine. He can eat Kraft Dinner with ketchup like a normal student.
I thought I reacted quite respectably. No screaming, Just multiple shudders.
Hey you were supposed to let Helena and I know when you were in our Summer place town LOL.
Always happy to read your updates 🙂
Carm, Helena and Coco
We’ll be close by ALL summer next year and will be sure to arrange a visit. We were near Wellington/Bloomfield this time. Is that close to where you are?
Looking forward to it!
We are at Quinte’s Isle campark in Cherry Valley, it’s basically next to Sandbanks Provincial Park. We know where you rented the E-Bikes we have popped in there a few times :).
Best wishes on a smooth move!
