For the past few years, Ray has volunteered with Citizen Advocacy, a program where volunteers are matched with a ‘protegé’ to provide friendship and support. Last November, Ray and Mark got tickets to the annual fundraising event – a dinner, silent auction and live entertainment. At the last minute, Ray had to go to Georgetown for a family emergency, so I stood in for him and went to the fundraiser with Mark.
I have a weakness for auctions…some might even say I get carried away. The item that caught my eye this time was a “private axe-throwing event for 10 people, including two X-large pizzas”. I thought I had a good chance of getting a deal, because most people at the event were older and I figured axe throwing was more of a young person’s sport (it slipped my mind, as it often does, that I’m in my mid-fifties…I was in the same demographic as the other attendees). In any case, no one outbid me and last weekend we cashed in my ‘prize’ to celebrate the February birthdays of Sue and Ray.
Our coach, Niles, provided some tips and gave us a few practice shots before we got started on the round-robin tournament. We took varying amounts of time to ‘perfect our techniques’ (i.e., get the axe in the board), but we all eventually figured it out. More or less.

Loved it! Who knew axe throwing could be so fun. Thanks for sharing!
